Education

In addition to the site works, the project has a significant number of education and community deliverables at several sites. These aim to inform and educate schools, local communities, volunteers and local stakeholders about the environment and heritage of heathland.

Planned work includes:

In the UK, a cross-curricular unit of work centred on heathlands is being developed for Key Stages 1 and 2. As part of this, Cornwall Wildlife Trust are developing a heathland wildlife workshop that can be delivered in schools or, ideally, out on the heath!

Production of a cross curricular unit of work connected to local heathlands. The online resource and CD rom will contain cross-curricular educational materials covering: the history, importance, uses, management and threats to the heathland landscape.

Volunteer work groups will be established on heathland sites in the project areas. Volunteers will be able to concentrate on work they have a particular interest in, from scrub-bashing through to butterfly recording. Free training will be offered, tailored to suit the individual needs of the groups.

Several heathland sites in Cornwall and Brittany will have self-guided trails developed on them, illustrated by colourful leaflets providing more information on the wildlife and history of the sites.

The need to communicate the project to wider audience is important for the HEATH project. There will be many dates when project displays are set up to educate people about the project and its aims. Our News section shows the dates and details of the next public events.
